About The Position

The Landfill Operator - Class B is responsible for safe and effective equipment operations in processing solid waste for the Solid Waste Division and removal of illegally dumped piles throughout Polk County. This role involves operating a wide variety of equipment that may be complex in nature, requiring considerable dexterity and acute motor skills. The operator will process both hazardous and non-hazardous refuse and solid waste, actively participating in maintaining the Solid Waste Division’s exceptional performance level by meeting and/or exceeding job requirements and customer expectations with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in the operation and routine maintenance of landfill operations.
  • Possess a valid Class B Commercial driver’s license or be able to secure one at the time of employment.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to interpret rules of the State Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • Private Industry Experience in landfills, transfer stations, collections, and recycling.
  • Experience operating a Claw and/or Roll-Off Truck.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all pieces of equipment effectively in a high-paced landfill environment.
  • Process over a high volume of tonnage per day and service multiple customers on-demand.
  • Utilize various equipment including Compactor, Grader, Dozer, Excavator, and more.
  • Perform day-to-day field operations in compliance with state and local requirements.
  • Construct and maintain berms and drainage systems to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Minimize truck turnaround time and maintain temporary haul roads.
  • Apply and maintain initial cover to minimize adverse environmental effects.
  • Work with Environmental Compliance Worker to ensure compliance and good customer service.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment.
  • Perform light service and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
