About The Position

The Landfill Inspector position is primarily responsible for conducting comprehensive inspections of landfills to ensure compliance with environmental health standards and landfill permit requirements. This role involves evaluating landfill operations, monitoring leachate systems, and addressing environmental complaints. The inspector will also engage in environmental health inspections and collaborate on studies related to environmental impact and air quality.

Requirements

  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist certification.
  • Experience in conducting environmental health inspections and assessments.
  • Knowledge of landfill operations and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare detailed reports.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for public interaction and collaboration.

  • Experience with environmental impact studies and air quality monitoring.
  • Familiarity with macro-invertebrate surveys and ecological assessments.
  • Training experience in environmental health for staff.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct landfill inspections to ensure compliance with permit requirements and protect public health and the environment.
  • Monitor leachate collection systems to prevent clogs and chemical reactions that could compromise the system.
  • Analyze leachate composition, collection, and flow.
  • Identify potential nuisance issues related to landfill operations.
  • Perform macro-invertebrate surveys to assess environmental health indicators over time.
  • Respond to environmental complaints and emergencies related to the landfill, available 24/7.
  • Collaborate on environmental impact studies and analyze air quality data.
  • Monitor the integrity of the double-liner system to prevent leaks.
  • Conduct field inspections to minimize liner failure risks.
  • Prepare written inspection reports and findings for each inspection conducted.
  • Review site plans, facility logs, and ensure compliance with approved waste types.
  • Conduct routine environmental health testing and inspections of licensed locations.
  • Issue violations for non-compliance with laws or rules.
  • Investigate complaints and conduct timely investigations.
  • Consult with public officials and stakeholders on environmental health matters.
  • Assist in preparing environmental health ordinances for local agencies.
  • Participate in emergency management and professional development activities.
  • Maintain daily activity logs and perform necessary clerical tasks.
  • Train and support the development of staff in training.
