About The Position

An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking a Land Survey Project Manager I to join our growing Construction and Survey team in Vernon Hills, IL. What you can expect: The Land Survey Project Manager I will report to the Senior Project Manager or Division Director and perform a variety of technical engineering work involving both field and office support of land surveying project. This position also includes operating various types of equipment, performing related mathematical computations, and project management. This role is a exempt, salaried, position. We offer a hybrid work environment.

Requirements

  • Related Bachelor’s Degree required in field related to the projects managed.
  • Six (6) years of land surveying or related project experience including four (4) years as a major contributor on contract deliverable development or project leader.
  • This position requires a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license, Survey Intern (SI) license, or Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level IV Certificate.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License and registered insured personal vehicle.
  • Perform at a high level in staff management, client management or a combination of both as summarized below.
  • Generate up to $750,000 in revenue as a client manager.
  • Manage a staff of up to three (3) direct reports with responsibilities that include: Completes yearly goals development and achievement Conducts yearly performance reviews and provides input on compensation adjustments Plans staff career development and facilitates desired training
  • Ability to independently identify, evaluate, select, and apply engineering criteria and standards to manage the delivery of project scope including the development of technical documents across several engineering disciplines.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the requirements and processes of medium complexity projects sufficient for developing work plans and reviewing work products.
  • Use project management tools to monitor project schedule, budget and manpower requirements and communicate those expectations to project team. This includes completing draft project invoices for review and approval.
  • Ability to shift team priorities when needed during project development.
  • Perform site visits to observe and/or troubleshoot complex issues when required.
  • Lead project-related communication and meetings with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation OpenRoads Designer is required.
  • Ability to lead the development of project proposals or lead specific elements of the proposal.
  • Proficiency with software products: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) PDF editing software (Adobe, Bluebeam, etc.)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD system to draft/calculate detailed topographic, right-of-way, Survey Plans, boundary and ALTA/ACSM Land Title Survey drawings such as those needed for highway plans, site/land development, municipal improvement projects, and water control projects.
  • Ability to competently read and interpret civil, architectural, and structural drawings, including complex details.
  • The ability to coordinate between professional, support staff, and quality control, have good interpersonal skills, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. and is responsible for ensuring all work is completed in accordance with current standards of practice for land surveying.
  • Proficient in writing and interpreting Legal Descriptions, Title Commitments, and preparing plats of surveys, and complex survey documents under a Professional Land Surveyor.
  • The ability to analyze problematic situations, seek relevant data, diagnosing information to solve problems, and generalizing alternative solutions to find the best solution.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for at least two (2) survey crews, scheduling, work progress, and ensuring that task, project schedules, proposal requirements, and budgets are met, along with working collaboratively with other Project Managers to manage and maintain staff schedule and forecast.
  • Field visits to ensure staff operates survey instruments, conducts basic field adjustments, maintains neat and orderly field notes, utilizes hand-held data collectors/computerized software and performs research required to complete surveys and staking appropriately and GHA standards.
  • Perform QA/QC and make recommendations for changes. Responsible for completing quality control reviews of existing condition surveys, boundary surveys, and various Plats.
  • Utilize various surveying, engineering, management, and word processing software including Trimble Business Center, and other programs used within the division.
  • Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives, attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending systems/management training.
