About The Position

The Land Protection Specialist works with a wide range of colleagues on the implementation of strategic land protection projects that secure important habitat for plants and animals along with resilient and connected natural systems that facilitate climate adaptation for people and nature. The Specialist uses the full range of protection tools, including gift, easement, purchase, and cooperative projects with federal, state, and local government, conservation organizations, private landowners, Tribal governments, and other partners as appropriate. The Land Protection Specialist works with a team to support projects that advance TNC’s conservation priorities by initiating and managing TNC-led transactions as well as working with land trusts, government agencies, Tribal Nations, and others in realizing land and water transactions and projects. The Specialist typically supports the principal project manager and/or direct negotiator on TNC-led real estate transactions but may take the lead on a subset of projects. The Specialist manages protection inquiries and screens potential protection projects, and assists with complex real estate transactions, including securing and reviewing due diligence, maintaining project records, managing the internal approval process, and coordinating with project partners. While the work is focused in Colorado, the Specialist may also assist projects that extend beyond state borders to achieve larger regional goals. The Specialist reports to the Land Protection Program Manager within Colorado’s Resilient Lands Team.

Requirements

  • BA/BS, law or business degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and timelines.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
  • Experience with principles of land acquisition.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Knowledge of land protection tools, including conservation easements, fee-title acquisitions, donations, and deed restrictions.
  • Familiarity with Colorado’s cultural and natural history and conservation issues, including trends in land protection and a familiarity with Indigenous and Tribal priorities.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation and land protection.
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Working knowledge of GIS.
  • Experience working with financial modeling.
  • Experience building relationships and working effectively with a wide range of partners.
