About The Position

The Lactation Specialist RN provides inpatient lactation education services to promote breastfeeding as the optimal form of infant nutrition. This role involves training and supporting mother/infant pairs to ensure a positive breastfeeding experience, thereby increasing the duration of breastfeeding practices. The specialist collaborates with various healthcare teams to identify at-risk mothers and newborns, develops educational programs, and participates in community outreach to enhance lactation support services.

Requirements

  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Associate's degree in Nursing is required; Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Valid Florida RN license is required.
  • Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) as an IBCLC required, or ability to obtain within the first 12 months of employment.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with healthcare teams to identify mothers and newborns at risk for breastfeeding problems.
  • Provides follow-up support or facilitates appropriate referrals for post-discharge support.
  • Develops a nursing staff lactation support teaching program in collaboration with the clinical educator and Breastfeeding Task Force.
  • Teaches and mentors nursing staff in clinical breastfeeding support skills.
  • Incorporates teaching fundamentals of successful breastfeeding and lactation support during clinical interventions.
  • Utilizes evidence-based research to support clinical, educational, and consultative roles.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary performance improvement and clinical research to promote evidence-based lactation services.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of practice and protocols in lactation.
  • Identifies and analyzes system barriers to excellent care and develops plans to resolve them.
  • Demonstrates professional leadership and development through conduct and communication.
  • Develops and provides breastfeeding resource services in cooperation with IBCLCs and parent educators.
  • Participates in community outreach to support breastfeeding and increase awareness of lactation services.
