About The Position

The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing safe, family-centered care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient's family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. The Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Bachelor Degree Nursing in Nursing (or related field)
  • 1 or more years with inpatient lactation programs and/or nursing with knowledge of the types of clinical breastfeeding issues seen in the early postpartum, neonatal and pediatric populations
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) upon hire or within 1 year of hire OR 1 of the following certifications: Certified Lactation Educator (CLE); Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC); Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS); or Peer Counselor (WIC, LLL, BFUSA or similar organization)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a clinical resource to all units within the hospital on issues related to lactation.
  • Collaborates with staff on developing resolutions to any inpatient breastfeeding problems.
  • Develops and provides breastfeeding information, education, and support to patients.
  • Participates in staff orientation, education, and clinical development; and participate in educational opportunities for staff regarding breastfeeding.
  • Assists with teaching prenatal classes, participate in inpatient and outpatient teaching programs, and provide telephone support to women who call with questions regarding breastfeeding and maintain records of those calls.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.
