About The Position

The Lactation Consultant plays a vital role in enhancing the breastfeeding experience for expectant and new parents on the LDRP unit at Meritus Medical Center. This position provides education, support, counseling, and hands-on assistance to patients and families while collaborating closely with medical and nursing staff to assess, manage, and resolve breastfeeding challenges. The Lactation Consultant also serves as a clinical resource for staff, promoting evidence-based lactation practices and optimal maternal–infant outcomes.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN preferred), OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in a health-related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Women’s Health , including patient education.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership or advanced practice role.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and maintain strong organizational skills.
  • Attains and maintains certification in lactation specialty.
  • Current BLS in compliance with policy required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in an LDRP or Mother-Baby unit preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized breastfeeding education, support, and counseling to expectant and postpartum parents.
  • Deliver direct patient care, including assessment and management of breastfeeding and lactation concerns.
  • Develop and implement plans of care in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Support and educate nursing and clinical staff on lactation best practices and current evidence-based guidelines.
  • Identify, assess, and manage common and complex breastfeeding issues.
  • Promote a supportive, family-centered approach to breastfeeding within the LDRP unit.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
  • Serve as a leader and resource for lactation-related initiatives and quality improvement efforts.
