About The Position

General Summary Provides lactation management services to expectant and new parents. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within the clinical specialty. Supports the development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with services and cost effectiveness at the unit level. Strives to provide an environment where patients, families, and colleagues collaborate in the delivery of care, is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance. Requirements

  • Maryland RN Licensure required
  • Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required
  • Associate Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • BLS (Required)
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily bedside lactation rounds
  • Maintains a safe environment utilizing appropriate equipment and safety devices.
  • Recognizes the potential for abuse or neglect
  • Demonstrates knowledge base and actions in the care of age specific populations.
  • Independently practices with solid knowledge of lactation and clinical support of the breastfeeding dyad.
  • Competent in care of unit specific patient population and functions effectively in roles specific to the unit:
  • Consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems
  • Selects appropriate breastfeeding supplies for the patients use
  • Plan, organize and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients.
  • Utilizes and integrates evidence into practice
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs
  • Assist the mother in establishing healthy breastfeeding patterns for nursery and Pediatrics populations
  • Participates in unit based Clinical Practice activities.
  • Integrates patient education materials utilizing the Teach Back methodology.
  • Engaged in advancing own practice
  • Contributes to ancillary personnel skills and development.
  • Plans, teaches and conducts in-service education for staff
  • Offers consistent and visible support to team members.
  • Participates in unit based Professional Development activities
  • Contributes to unit based education and learning activities (one per year that could be posters, storyboards, presentation, in-service, group project)
  • Completes a minimum of (10) CE's annually (a minimum of 50% continuing education hours must be directly related to the full scope of your certification and or specialty; a minimum of 50% of our 10 continuing education hours must be formally approved CE's) or successful completion of six (6) credit hours towards a BSN
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI), National Hospital Quality Measures, National Patient Safety Goals, HCAHPS and contributes to unit initiatives to improve them.
  • Participates in the unit base process improvement efforts. Assists in development and action plans and supports implementation of breastfeeding initiatives.
  • Participates in the elements of research and advancing breastfeeding practices
  • Assist with regulatory readiness
  • Models professional behavior and culture of excellence standards on a consistent basis with the emphasis on the UM BWMC model of care.
  • Delegates appropriately to other healthcare team members
  • Participates in team building efforts on units; supports and models teamwork throughout the organization
  • Participates in unit/hospital/community based committee or councils
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead, organize and develop lactation programs.
  • Participate and support the AACN guideline for Healthy Work Environment (communication, collaboration, effective decision making, recognition, leadership, staffing).
  • Manages the acquisition of breast pumps through the mother's insurance prior to discharge. Coordinates and arranges for an adequate in inventory of breast pumps and complies with standards for unit operations (equipment, scheduling, guidelines, etc.)
  • Provides feedback for peer review as requested.
