About The Position

The position involves acting as a facilitator to assist new parents, newborns, infants, and families in decision-making, self-care, and infant care related to feeding. The role requires performing assessments on inpatients and outpatients referred for individual chest/breastfeeding consultations, teaching, and feeding support sessions. The facilitator will plan, implement, and evaluate individual chest/breastfeeding education based on patient assessments and medical plans of care, while also documenting all aspects of the education provided.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum of five years of experience within inpatient care in the OB and/or newborn setting.
  • Experience in parent education.
  • Licensed RN with NH eligibility.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC).
  • BLS certification within 30 days.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assessments on inpatients and outpatients referred for individual chest/breastfeeding consultations.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate individual chest/breastfeeding education based on patient assessment and medical plan of care.
  • Teach patients and significant others about chest/breastfeeding self-management.
  • Document all aspects of chest/breastfeeding education.
  • Facilitate referrals to other healthcare professionals, community services, and support groups as needed.
  • Triage patients, plan/recommend interventions, and determine immediate needs for evaluation.
  • Initiate infant feeding education prenatally for families making feeding choices.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members in teaching parents and families in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Identify lactation needs and formulate plans for special needs parents and infants regarding infant nutrition.
  • Implement standards of care, policies, and procedures for infant nutrition.
  • Collaborate on written literature and brochures about infant and parent nutrition.
  • Develop in-services and one-on-one teaching for multi-disciplinary team members relevant to infant nutrition.
  • Serve as a resource for nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Support in maintaining statistics on the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center chest/breastfeeding population.
  • Maintain communication with other healthcare providers regarding referrals.
  • Utilize knowledge of age-related growth and development to individualize the nursing process.
  • Promote the philosophy, values, and goals of the organization and department.
  • Demonstrate patience, courtesy, and compassion in interactions with patients and others.
  • Comply with safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Participate in meetings, in-service sessions, and professional development programs.
