About The Position

American Water is seeking a Laborer to join our Field Operations team. This position offers a dynamic work environment where no two days are the same, focusing on troubleshooting, fixing, and providing essential services to the community. The Laborer will be responsible for constructing, operating, and maintaining a water distribution system, ensuring that we keep life flowing for our customers. The role requires working Tuesday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with rotating on-call responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school education or equivalent required.
• Knowledge of power-tool equipment and construction material.
• Ability to work in inclement weather daily.
• Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
• Requires normal physical and mechanical ability.
• Ability to frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
• Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
• Water Distribution Certification Grade I must be attained within 18 months of hiring.

Responsibilities

• Sets up barricades and traffic cones.
• Breaks pavement where necessary by use of jackhammer or other methods.
• Loads and unloads pipes and fittings.
• Digs trenches using a shovel or other methods.
• Places pipes and fittings.
• Tamps and backfills trenches.
• Builds rough forms for cement work.
• Acts as flagman to direct traffic.
• Sweeps and performs maintenance.
• Repairs water line breaks and/or leaks as required.
• Changes water meters.
• Performs routine maintenance on valves and fire-hydrants.
• Takes after-hours emergency call-outs and is on-call.
• Performs duties of other job classifications as needed.
