About The Position

The Laborer (Trails MVO) position within the Department of the Interior's Pacific West Region involves supporting trail maintenance and rehabilitation projects in various parks. This temporary role requires considerable physical effort and the ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions, including hiking and camping in rugged backcountry areas. The position is seasonal, typically from April to October, and may involve working full-time or part-time based on project needs.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to perform the work of a Laborer (Trails-MVO) WG-3502-4 without more than normal supervision.
  • Experience in trail crew work in remote areas.
  • Ability to hike several miles with a backpack weighing at least 50 pounds.
  • Experience using tools such as shovels, picks, rakes, and saws for landscaping or construction work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Previous camping experience in backcountry settings.

Responsibilities

  • Support trail maintenance and rehabilitation projects throughout backcountry and front country trails.
  • Perform trail brushing and removal of debris and windfall from the trail corridor.
  • Construct and repair trail bridges.
  • Recondition trail drainage systems and replace culverts.
  • Maintain and clean backcountry toilet facilities.
  • Engage in physical labor including operating chainsaws and moving heavy objects.
