About The Position

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor or designee, performs manual labor in a variety of tasks in the maintenance of City parks and facilities. Subject to after hours and weekend work as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • Knowledge of: General principals of grounds and landscape maintenance activities and vegetation control.
  • Proper tools and equipment required for performance of assigned duties.
  • Safe use and proper care and usage of hand tools and small powered equipment.
  • Laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles and safe driving practices.
  • Applicable health and safety policy, procedures, and practices.
  • Skills and Abilities to: Operate light duty vehicles and battery, electric, or fuel powered equipment.
  • Utilize hand and power tools used in performance of duties.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently and perform semi-skilled tasks without close supervision.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Adhere to work policies and procedures as established by the City and assigned supervisor.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of professional experience in lawn maintenance and landscaping, including athletic fields, public parks, and turf maintenance.
  • Two (2) years of experience and knowledge of other specialties, such as irrigation, herbicide/pesticide, arboriculture, janitorial, building maintenance and repair, carpentry, plumbing, and mechanical.
  • Two (2) years of experience in ballfield maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general maintenance and cleanup of grounds, facilities, and other assigned areas.
  • Assists in turf placement, seeding, fertilizing, and maintenance.
  • Performs fertilizing using a push spreader.
  • Assists in the repair of irrigation systems and piping up to 4-inches.
  • Prepares and maintains ball fields to game conditions.
  • Plants flowers and small shrubs.
  • Assists in the repair of park equipment and facilities.
  • Assists in playground installation.
  • Removes litter and debris.
  • Paints over/removes graffiti, and assists with other painting assignments.
  • Performs janitorial work.
  • Cleans wading pools and splash pads.
  • Tests wading pool and adds chemicals as needed.
  • Operates equipment to include, light trucks, small dump trucks, compactor truck, ballfield machine, and chipper.
  • Operates mowing equipment to include, riding mowers, skag mowers, hand powered mowers, 72" riding mowers, and 16-foot-wide mowers.
  • Operates gas powered equipment to include, backpack blower, string trimmer, edger, vacuum, sod cutter, pressure washer, weedwhacker, snow blower, small hand and power tools, aerator, and chainsaw.
  • Operate City vehicles and equipment in a proper and safe manner.
  • Receives zone assignments and reports on progress to lead(s) and supervisor.
  • Prioritize and effectively execute zone assignments.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
