About The Position

The Headquarters' Laboratory Technologist-Battery Test Laboratory(BTL) is an integral part of the Engineering and Laboratory Team. The Technologist supports engineering, quality, and manufacturing activities by preparing and testing batteries, individual battery components, and associated samples. The technologist will also collect, analyze, and distribute data to engineers and scientists as per the submitted requests. They will assist with the daily analytical testing utilizing various analytical instrumentation and battery testing equipment. The Technologist also assists scientists and engineers with special projects requiring technical knowledge. They assist in maintaining all laboratory equipment, instruments, functions, and processes. The Technologist will have main responsibilities in the Battery Test Lab and will also cross-train/assist in the HQ Materials Lab(CML) and the Lithium Ion Lab(Li-Ion). The Technologist will also be responsible for assisting in safely handling, documenting, and coordinating the movement of batteries and other items, requiring strict adherence to hazardous material (HAZMAT) regulations, operating forklifts, managing inventory, inspecting shipments for damage/accuracy, and assisting in leading staff to ensure efficient, compliant, and safe operations of shipping and receiving. Stryten Energy is located north of Atlanta in Alpharetta, GA. This position requires you to be on-site daily.

Requirements

  • Four-Year Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline with a minimum of two years’ experience in a development or quality laboratory environment
  • or Two-year degree in chemical technology with 4 years of experience using electrical and chemical instrumentation
  • or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry tests or ability to be trained in the techniques.
  • Knowledgeable in chemical and physical testing of battery components and electrical testing of all categories of flooded and valve-regulated batteries.
  • Understands alternative battery technologies.
  • Familiar with all lab policies and procedures.
  • Uses full range of battery knowledge to set up, monitor, and manage specialized tests.
  • Knowledge of Battery Testing Equipment/Instruments (Bitrodes (LCV6 Testers, LCN Testers, Chargers, CV16 Testers, MCV Testers, DTN Testers), Vibration Tables, Water Baths, Environmental Chambers, Freezers, Thermotrons, and Maccor).
  • Capacity to gain knowledge of ICP, XRD, MTL, PSZ, SEM, Instron, BET, PYC, PRS, DSC, FTIR, GC, and ECC Instrumentation, operating principles, maintenance, and basic repair, or ability to be trained in the techniques in the CML.
  • Knowledge in all aspects of laboratory operation, including chemical, physical, electrical, and environmental lab activities.
  • Familiar with all lab policies and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Windows-based programs, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation programs, inventory control, and calibration platforms (Gage Pack), data analysis programs (Mini-Tab(6sigma) ). Experience with scientific/statistics software packages is preferred.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical instruction manuals and specifications.
  • Capable of writing technical reports and effectively presenting information in discussions within the company.
  • Good record-keeping and documentation skills.

  • Ability to generate statistically fitted curves and plots from raw data.

  • Ability to use hand tools as needed to tear down batteries for analysis.

  • Ability to handle physical work and work under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare batteries or sub-components for test and conduct testing as required.
  • Compile test data for analysis and provide summaries and reports to the requester or engineer.
  • Use a full range of battery knowledge to set up, monitor, and manage specialized tests.
  • Analyze battery and warranty failures, working with both Engineering and Quality functions.
  • With training, will perform specialized techniques for chemical analysis on inorganic and organic battery materials.
  • Develop knowledge in all aspects of laboratory operation, including chemical, physical, electrical, and environmental lab activities, and be able to demonstrate growing independence with testing in these areas.
  • Assist in preparing, reviewing, or modifying laboratory work instructions as required.
  • Assists in maintaining the work environment in a safety-conscious manner and ensures laboratory cleanliness is maintained.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Familiar with all lab safety policies and procedures. (Chemical Hygiene Plan, 5-S Plan, HQ Lab EHS Safety Platform, EHS Policies)
  • Ensures visitors to the lab understand and follow all lab safety procedures.
  • Familiar with work-related SDSs and assists in maintaining the SDS System.
  • Assists in the maintenance of supplies, chemicals, and gas inventories.
  • Recommends and aids in updating safety policies as required per 5-S and Chemical Hygiene guidelines.
  • Ensures laboratory is clean and organized at all times per 5-S Standards.
  • Help maintain and calibrate battery and analytical test equipment as required per laboratory standards and guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledgeable on the operation and function of all laboratory equipment.
  • Troubleshooting equipment problems.
  • Maintains maintenance records and calibration records of lab equipment.
  • Aids in scheduling and coordinating service on all lab instruments.
  • Performs & documents calibration activities per procedures and required designated times.
  • Assist engineers on special projects as directed.
  • Help provide guidance to the lab team and technicians in their work.
  • Assists with technical problems associated with routine analysis.
  • Works with lab management to conceive solutions for unusual testing challenges.
  • Assists engineers in defining test regimes.
  • Aids in maintaining Laboratory Request Systems, Log systems, and Computer Server Systems.
  • Aids in monitoring lab work status.
  • Ensures Laboratory TAT (Turn Around Time) goals and standards are met.
  • Assists with Shipping/Receiving Responsibilities
  • Receiving: Unload trucks, inspect incoming batteries for damage/accuracy against purchase orders, record discrepancies, and process returns.
  • Shipping: Securely package batteries (preventing short circuits/heat with non-conductive materials, enclosed packaging) for road/air transport, ensuring correct labeling, documentation (BOLs, packing lists).
  • Inventory: Accurately track stock levels, update inventory systems, and stage batteries/components for testing/shipping.
  • HAZMAT Compliance: Strictly follow DOT/IATA regulations (49 CFR 173.159) for shipping lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, components, and laboratory chemicals/waste, including proper packaging and labeling.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate forklifts (obtain forklift certification), pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Leadership: Guide, train, and coordinate lab and engineering staff, ensuring adherence to procedures and safety standards.
  • Communication: Act as a liaison with manufacturing plants, recycling centers, logistics, engineering, customer service, carriers, and management; provide shipment updates.
  • Safety: Enforce departmental safety, security, and environmental protocols (e.g., managing battery acid exposure, lithium handling safety guidelines).
  • Conducts other lab functions as deemed necessary by Lab Management.
