About The Position

The Laboratory Technician position involves technical laboratory work focused on the analysis of water and sewage to meet in-house and State requirements. The role requires adherence to established sterile and testing procedures, with a strong emphasis on accuracy and alertness due to the potential health implications for the community. The technician will work under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director and will be responsible for various laboratory activities, including sample collection and analysis.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a Natural Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, or related field).
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college with an Associate's Degree in a Natural Science and two years of experience as a Laboratory Technician.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and completion of an accepted training program for Laboratory Technician and two years of experience as a Laboratory Technician.
  • Possession of a New York State driver's license at the time of appointment and maintenance of the license during the entire length of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine sanitary analysis of water or sewage, including physical, chemical, bacteriological, and microscopic examinations.
  • Collect samples for sanitary analysis.
  • Test ambient air for gas contamination.
  • Prepare chemical media for analysis of water or sewage samples.
  • Test samples for various factors such as color, turbidity, taste, odor, oxygen value, hardness, alkalinity, chlorides, iron, pH value, and residual chlorine.
  • Perform special tests to determine mineral analysis and chemical balance of water or sewage.
  • Make varying solutions of reagents and standardize reagents.
  • Inspect laboratory equipment to ensure proper operating conditions.
  • Record test results and maintain laboratory records and activity reports.
  • Maintain automatic chemical analysis equipment and prepare chemical reagents used by the equipment.
  • Participate in technical, clerical, and housekeeping activities in the laboratory.
