SUMMARY: Perform laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Internships and laboratory experience will be considered.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.
  • Ability to do some basic algebra, calculus, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Valid driver’s license not required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use of hands and/or finger to feel objects, work tools, or controls; talk or hear and smell.
  • For certain analytical tests the ability to see color is required, a color blindness test will be taken to determine the ability to be able to perform some of those tests.
  • The employee frequently isrequired to walk.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and with explosive material and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of radiation.

Responsibilities

  • Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as FTIRs, ICPS, balance/scales, spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, colorimeter, and other equipment.
  • Tests in-service lubricants for maintenance and reliability purposes for characteristics such as wear, contamination, viscosity, density, cleanliness, and degradation by-products.
  • Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used.
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Calibrates laboratory instruments.
  • Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.
  • Adds chemicals or raw materials to process solutions or products batches to correct or establish formulation required to meet specifications.
