Laboratory Technician Augusta, ME Health & Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL) Position Summary The Laboratory Technician supports the Environmental Inorganic and Microbiology (IMB) section by preparing, preserving, and analyzing aqueous environmental and drinking water samples for inorganic compounds and microbiological contamination. This role directly supports Maine’s Safe Drinking Water Program and Environmental Water Quality Program. These services are procured through RFQ #2020068 to ensure adequate staffing for increasing sample volume—particularly time‑sensitive inorganic samples, many of which must be analyzed within 8 hours of collection. Proper staffing is essential to maintain quality, timeliness, and public health protection. HETL is certified under 10‑144 CMR Ch. 263 (DHHS) and 06‑096 CMR Ch. 263 (DEP), which requires laboratory management to ensure adequate personnel with appropriate education, training, and technical competency. This position is critical for meeting that requirement.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory testing methods, materials, and techniques
  • Knowledge of basic principles of chemistry and biology
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment
  • Ability to follow prescribed procedures accurately
  • Ability to make precise observations and interpret test results
  • Ability to detect differences in colors
  • Ability to use a programmable calculator
  • High School Diploma or equivalent including at least one laboratory science course, OR
  • One (1) year of laboratory experience

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a natural science curriculum

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory instruments
  • Accept or reject Quality Control (QC) data
  • Assess sample integrity and determine suitability for testing
  • Prioritize, queue, and perform requested analyses
  • Update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain proficiency in assigned analyses
  • Communicate technical information to federal, state, and local agencies, as well as customers
  • Review quality assurance and analytical data for accuracy and compliance
  • Participate in daily operations within the IMB testing section
  • Enter, manage, and maintain data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Follow all laboratory safety, waste handling, and contamination control protocols
