About The Position

All positions require that the applicant be a resident of Wyandotte county or willing to relocate within (12) months from the date of hire. Job Description: The Kansas City, Kansas Environmental Services Division is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support regulatory compliance and operations of the wastewater system. This position involves performing technical work related to the chemical and bacteriological testing of industrial wastewater, influent, and effluent to ensure compliance with discharge standards and support treatment plant operations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED) and 20 credit hours of college-level courses in Chemistry or Biology is required
  • One year of relevant experience required
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of Chemistry, Biology, and Bacteriology as related to the analysis of wastewater
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and techniques used in wastewater laboratory.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks according to standard procedures and make accurate observations and records of test results.
  • Ability to maintain required documents and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, label, and prepare wastewater samples from influent, effluent, and industrial dischargers
  • Load and operate sampling equipment; collect samples from industries and remote treatment locations using Unified Government vehicles
  • Assemble, set up, and calibrate laboratory instruments for analytical work
  • Prepare chemical and bacteriological media, stains, reagents, and test solutions
  • Conduct laboratory tests and analyses to determine required plant operational factors
  • Record, interpret, and report analytical data in accordance with established procedures
  • Clean, maintain, and store laboratory instruments, equipment, and supplies
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of laboratory chemicals, media, and consumables
  • Perform related work as assigned in support of environmental compliance and treatment operations
