About The Position

As the Laboratory Technician 1, you will play a key role in the Sample Receiving section of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL), where you will support daily laboratory operations under general supervision. You will perform routine laboratory procedures as well as simple, qualitative laboratory work. In this role, you will triage, examine, evaluate, prepare, and route samples for testing, enter data into the Laboratory Information Management System, and operate and maintain laboratory equipment. You will interact regularly with WADDL clients, faculty, residents, and laboratory personnel while providing exceptional customer service. To be successful, you will bring familiarity with basic laboratory practices, equipment, and aseptic techniques, along with eligibility and understanding of BSL‑2 laboratory safety guidelines and work environments.

Requirements

  • Completion of a course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologtists for laboratory assistants OR two years of chemical, or clinical or public health laboratory experience. Training in medical technology or education in college with courses in laboratory sciences may be substituted, year for year, for experience.
  • Physical eligibility required for working in a BioSafety Lab-2 (BSL-2) environment.
  • Ability to rotate Saturdays and holidays as scheduled.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using COFL or similar laboratory information management or electronic medical record system
  • Experience handling biological specimens.
  • Exceptional data entry skills, demonstrating speed and accuracy.
  • Experience in a medical, healthcare, and/or veterinary laboratory setting
  • Experience providing exceptional customer service
  • Experience/Familiarity with Hand-Off Communication Standards
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to respond constructively to stressful situations and problems.
