Collects and prepares blood samples for laboratory testing. Enters collections of such specimens in lab information system. Assists medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests. Assists with maintaining laboratory equipment and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.

  • Uses skin puncture and venipuncture techniques to obtain blood samples.
  • Follows defined process in obtaining samples including verifying patient information, labeling specimen vials, and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Disposes of contaminated needles in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  • Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
  • Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into appropriate system(s).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified as a phlebotomy technician.
  • Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
