About The Position

The Laboratory Tech Assistant at Bon Secours St Mary's Hospital is a part-time role focused on preparing specimens for analysis and supporting laboratory operations. The position involves performing pre-analytical and analytical procedures, ensuring specimen acceptability, and maintaining laboratory equipment. This role is essential for providing accurate and timely laboratory services to support patient care.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or GED (required)
  • Associates in Biology or Chemistry (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Prepare specimens for analysis by registering and accessioning orders via Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Perform waived and limited moderately complex testing as defined by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
  • Report testing and quality control procedures according to established protocols; evaluate specimen acceptability and implement corrective action within scope of training.
  • Support technologists by loading and maintaining instruments, making up reagents, thawing, pooling, importing, and issuing blood products.
  • Recognize instrument and equipment malfunctions and inform appropriate personnel of issues and resolutions.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair clinical laboratory equipment, including routine preventative maintenance and safety checks.
  • Register, enter insurance information, accession, triage, and process specimens in preparation for testing and transit.
  • Use computer programs to track specimen transport and minimize lost specimens.
  • Provide laboratory customer service including requests for add-ons, specimen collection information, phlebotomy requests, and result inquiries.
  • Maintain inventory levels and stock supplies.
  • When in the Microbiology department, perform culture setup of microbiology samples and gram stain preparation.
