About The Position

UnityPoint-St Luke's Hospital is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team in a full-time night position. The role involves interfacing the laboratory with its Reference Laboratory and Hospital Customers by performing complex patient registrations and managing laboratory orders. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of laboratory processes, communicating effectively with various stakeholders, and supporting the pathologists in their functions. This position requires a commitment to clinical excellence and patient care, as well as technical and operational expertise in laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency required.
  • 1 year work experience in a related field.
  • Proficiency with computer data entry functions.
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Fluent in English, with strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • Multicultural sensitivity and customer/patient focus.
  • Critical thinking skills and independent judgment in decision-making.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of lab CPT codes and diagnosis codes.
  • OSHA Bio-Hazard Certification (if designated to drive).
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specimen processing for reference laboratory outreach patient testing and initiates inpatient processing.
  • Assists lab outpatients in the collection process of specimens for testing.
  • Monitors patients during complex lab test procedures and communicates test results to providers and patients.
  • Performs complex reference laboratory patient registrations in both the Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information System.
  • Investigates and confirms insurance eligibility to prevent errors and delays in payment.
  • Obtains and verifies orders from physicians and other care providers.
  • Processes specimens, including verification of integrity and handling of specimens.
  • Communicates critical information and special requests during the registration and order entry process.
  • Trains new lab registration staff and participates in weekend and holiday call support.
