About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Laboratory Supervisor in our Cleveland Works chemical laboratory. The successful candidate will combine strong technical and analytical skills with effective communication and leadership, ensuring safe, accurate, and reliable laboratory operations. This role includes supervising hourly union employees, supporting audit readiness, maintaining laboratory equipment, developing and applying analytical methods, and coordinating with operations to provide timely and reliable support for manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Technical Sciences or Engineering such as Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering or applicable relevant experience ie. experience in atomic emission spectroscopy (OES, XRF, ICP).
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication, analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to thrive in a diverse and dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated success in problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Chemistry.
  • Supervisory experience within a heavy industry unionized environment
  • A2LA training.
  • Experience in atomic emission spectroscopy (OES, XRF, ICP).
  • Experience with LECO elemental analyzers (C, S, N, O).
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Supervise, train, schedule, and manage the safety of hourly union employees.
  • Work effectively within a team environment using clear and effective communication skills.
  • Develop and implement processes to ensure timely and accurate results and drive continuous improvement.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits for Quality, Safety, and Environmental standards, including IATF 16949 and ISO 17025 accreditation through A2LA.
  • Develop analytical methods and apply ASTM and other agency test methods, including creating new test methods as needed.
  • Perform timely maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of laboratory, sample preparation, and testing equipment to ensure reliable support for manufacturing operations.
  • Create and maintain work instructions for laboratory procedures within the area of responsibility.
  • Manage inventory of laboratory chemicals and equipment spares within budgetary limits.
  • Communicate with upstream and downstream operations and external contractors to coordinate work, deliveries, and services.
  • Acquire, install, and set up new equipment.
  • Perform other duties as required to support business operations.
