About The Position

The Laboratory Specialist position at the Center for Biomarker Research and Precision Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University involves conducting laboratory technical applications to support research in molecular biology and genomics. Requirements

  • Bachelor of science degree with documented experience in molecular biology and genetics, or equivalent.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory environment with excellent hands-on skills and theoretical knowledge in basic molecular biology including PCR and RT-PCR, RNA/DNA extractions, and sample quantification.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work cleanly and reproducibly to prevent contamination and sample mix-up.
  • Strong ability to work independently.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to master new techniques and technologies quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science degree or Ph.D. with documented experience in molecular biology and genetics, or equivalent.
  • Experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and hands-on experience with various types of sample preparation, library construction, and quality control procedures.
  • Experience with single-cell/single-nucleus technology.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct lab technical applications; process bio-samples; and construct sequencing libraries.
  • Maintain the laboratory environment and lab-technical instrumentation.
  • Document, evaluate data, and communicate findings; review and evaluate quality control information.
  • Develop protocols and understand every step to optimize for high-quality data.
  • Engage in professional development to learn new molecular biology and genomic techniques.
  • Independently handle and maintain advanced genomics instrumentation after appropriate training.
