Position Summary The Laboratory Shipping Specialist I is responsible for performing all specimen return activities for the clinical laboratory. They support the department with all clerical and ancillary duties, including specimen storage/retrieval and shipment setup/packaging. The Laboratory Shipping specialist plays a major quality control role in the laboratory, routinely confirming that specimen identifiers were entered into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) correctly, that the correct originating pathology laboratory was associated to the specimen, and that the correct shipping address for that pathology laboratory is entered into the LIS. This position works under the direction of the Supervisor and follows standard laboratory procedures and policies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to take and follow direction and to know who the resources are for their direction.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.

Nice To Haves

  • One to three years' experience in general laboratory operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • File Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) blocks in accession # order after microtomy is complete; pulls blocks from storage if needed for additional testing.
  • Prepare shipments of patient samples back to their originating pathology laboratory, including label creation and package setup.
  • Capture all outgoing specimens under the Video Receipt detail camera.
  • Follow all applicable local, state, and federal regulations surrounding the shipment of biological specimens.
  • Ensure quality by regularly confirming specimen identifiers are accurately entered into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Confirm that shipping addresses for pathology laboratories are accurate within Caris’ LIS; partners with the Customer Support team to make updates when necessary.
  • Review case documents to ensure specimen is sent to the correct pathology laboratory.
  • Capture appropriate information in the LIS and other log(s) as necessary.
  • Audit lab queues and specimen storage locations to ensure all specimens are returned in a timely manner.
  • Monitor the department email inbox and respond in a timely manner.
  • Assist as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support the laboratory as required.
  • Accepts other duties as assigned.
