About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000-square-mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories, and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities. The Division of Laboratory Services’ mission is to support the operations of the 14 WRRFs by performing the quasi-totality of the analytical testing needed by the WRRFs for compliance and process-control purposes. Specifically, the division is comprised of five laboratories performing microbiological and chemical testing. 1. All five laboratories are responsible for sample analysis, report preparation, sampling-container preparation, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control to meet EPA requirements and all other regulatory requirements. 2. The selected candidates for the Division of Laboratory Services will be assigned some or all of the following tasks: 3. Lab Work - With training, an intern could perform some portions of laboratory processing. 4. Data entry / data review 5. Sampling - container preparation 6. Sample - reception tasks 7. Assistance with quality-assurance tasks 8. Research - Always looking to keep current, so the intern could assist with researching literature. In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.

Requirements

  • As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
  • NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
