About The Position

This position is in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology in Dr. Jenna Guthmiller’s lab. This position will utilize molecular, biochemical, genetic, immunological, and in vitro approaches to study humoral immunity . This research position will involve handling primary human tissues, maintaining the laboratory biobank, maintaining the animal colony, and performing experiments on animals. This research position will involve laboratory-based studies on primary human cells and influenza viruses, with work performed at biosafety level 2. A successful candidate will take responsibility for overseeing the Guthmiller biobank, participate in research projects, and help maintain the operation of the laboratory. The candidate should have exceptional organization skills. The employee will be working closely with the lab manager and will assist a postdoctoral fellow in experimental work. Rarely, experimental protocols will require working in the evening or on weekends.

Requirements

  • Entry Level: Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field. A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Intermediate Level: Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field. A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis. One (1) year professional level research experience.
  • Senior Level: Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field. A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis. Two (2) years professional level research experience.
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Demonstrate that they are well-organized, reliable, independent, and possess considerable attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a basic science laboratory.
  • Experience with laboratory management.
  • Experience with animal breeding and handling.
  • Previous experience with flow cytometry, molecular biology/biochemistry.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain mouse colony (coordinating weaning, breeding, and crosses).
  • Maintain Inventory of lab consumables, including ensuring reagents are stocked and reordered when necessary.
  • Maintaining common lab equipment and ensuring all lab members have access.
  • Building working relationships with IACUC and EH&S staff to facilitate inspections, and updating the lab’s IACUC protocols, training documentation, SOPs, and EH&S compliance documentation.
  • Designing and performing experiments and analyzing data from those experiments, experimental techniques range from mouse infections/dissections, flow cytometry, nucleic acid isolation, qPCR/RNA-sequencing, genetic manipulation of viruses and in vitro cell culture.
  • Attending regular lab and departmental meetings
