About The Position

The Laboratory Quality Specialist I position at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) involves performing assessments of environmental laboratories to ensure compliance with State and Federal laws and Agency quality assurance procedures. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. The position is integral to maintaining laboratory accreditation and supporting the overall mission of safeguarding environmental quality in Illinois.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in microbiology, chemistry, medical technology, or a related field.
• Two years of professional laboratory or related experience.

Nice To Haves

• Working knowledge of laboratory methods and procedures.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment used in clinical or environmental laboratories.
• Ability to learn inspection and evaluation procedures for laboratories.
• Effective working relationships with laboratory directors.
• Independent judgment in recommending actions on license applications.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, as well as laboratory database software.
• Two years of experience in organic or inorganic chemistry.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing procedures for assessing applications for laboratory accreditation.
• Conduct on-site assessments of laboratories statewide to ensure compliance with established rules.
• Process applications for laboratory accreditation and maintain accreditation databases.
• Serve as a backup Certification Officer for assessing and approving laboratory accreditations.
• Prepare comprehensive laboratory inspection reports and assist in training workshops.
