About The Position

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the leadership, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance of a high-complexity outpatient clinical laboratory located on a college health campus. The laboratory performs testing in Hematology, Chemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, Microbiology/Molecular, and Urinalysis, as well as Point-of-Care (POC) testing. The Manager oversees day-to-day laboratory functions, supervises staff, ensures quality assurance and regulatory compliance, supports strategic initiatives, and fosters collaboration within and outside the CSU Health Network. The Laboratory Manager reports directly to the Associate Medical Director and has CLIA-regulated reporting responsibilities to the CSU Health Network part-time Laboratory Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field with completion of an accredited clinical internship
  • Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a high complexity laboratory
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience

  • Experience leading Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) inspections

  • Four plus years of supervisory experience
  • Membership in ASCLS or CACMLE
  • Maintains deep expertise across all high-complexity testing disciplines including microbiology, hematology, chemistry, immunology and molecular diagnostics
  • Demonstrates up-to-date understanding of regulatory frameworks (CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA) and integrates these into daily operations and decision-making
  • Evaluates and implements new methodologies and technologies based on analytical performance, clinical utility, cost, and operational feasibility
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of supervisory practices, team dynamics, adult learning, and staff development principles to support growth and retention
  • Applies institutional knowledge to navigate organizational systems, collaborate effectively, and contribute to strategic planning and budgeting processes
  • Leads validation and verification of instruments, assays, and software systems; ensures reliable LIS-EHR interoperability and resolves complex interfacing issues
  • Manages compliance through creation, review, and enforcement of laboratory policies, IQCPs, SOPs, and internal audit plans
  • Demonstrates expert-level interpretation of test results and provides clinically relevant insights in collaboration with the care team
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates training and competency assessment programs; ensures continuous staff readiness for internal and external audits
  • Communicates effectively across roles and departments; demonstrates active listening, clarity, and professionalism in verbal and written interactions
  • Applies strong project management, organizational, and time-management skills to maintain smooth lab operations, even during high-volume or high-stakes periods
  • Demonstrates advanced analytical thinking to identify, investigate, and resolve complex laboratory issues with sound judgment and minimal supervision
  • Exercises discretion and ethical judgment in handling sensitive information; upholds strict compliance with HIPAA and institutional standards
