The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is currently seeking a Laboratory Manager. This position, which is within the College of Engineering, is responsible for the smooth and safe operation of the ECE instructional labs and for the upkeep of instructional lab facilities within the ECE department.

Requirements

A. Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position
AND
two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position
OR
B. Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.
One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.

Nice To Haves

Education: Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in actual design and construction of electronics equipment (such as radio, radar, and scientific instrumentation).
Abilities: Experience in administrative, procedural, or customer service roles. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff. Proven ability to establish and enforce procedures that support safe, consistent, and efficient lab operations. Demonstrated ability to balance technical work with people-focused service and coordination.

Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day operations of ECE instructional laboratory facilities.
Specify and procure electronic equipment, components, and other lab supplies.
Analyze equipment usage and recommend new purchases to improve lab capabilities.
Maintain up-to-date documentation and ensure inventory control procedures are followed.
Ensure lab safety compliance in coordination with the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO)
Serve as a key point of contact for lab-related inquiries and support, providing technical guidance with professionalism and responsiveness.
Collaborate with course instructors to design and update instructional lab exercises.
Maintain current instructional lab manuals and documentation, either directly or through supervision of assigned staff.
Stay informed about emerging lab kits and equipment; work with instructors to integrate new hardware into instructional labs.
Recommend and develop new or improved electronics/electrical experiments for ECE courses.
Design, build, and maintain custom electronic circuits and interfaces used in the ECE instructional laboratories.
Perform routine maintenance and repairs on instructional lab equipment.
Supervise and train undergraduate and graduate student workers as needed.
Provide training to teaching assistants on the proper and safe use of lab equipment.
Coordinate activities and scheduling for student workers assigned to instructional labs.
Work with departmental and campus IT staff to ensure the proper operation of lab computing systems.
Design and install new lab setups when new equipment is acquired
Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.
