The Laboratory Manager at the University of Colorado Boulder is responsible for overseeing daily laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with various regulations, and supervising laboratory personnel to maintain high standards of clinical testing and reporting. This role involves leadership, regulatory compliance, and mentorship, with a focus on problem-solving and decision-making to support efficient laboratory performance for the college health population.

  • Assist in developing and implementing new/current policies, procedures, or processes in the document control system.
  • Ensure policies are reviewed at specific intervals and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Create and maintain reports to monitor laboratory activities.
  • Maintain operations of laboratory information systems and ensure accurate data flow to the clinic.
  • Perform staff evaluations, interviews, and counsel laboratory personnel regularly.
  • Assist in hiring and training new personnel and competency assessment and development.
  • Accountable for supply management, monthly operating reviews, equipment maintenance/calibrations, and adherence to QMR standards.
  • Maintain compliance documentation in accordance with regulating bodies (AAAHC, CLIA, FDA, OSHA, CAP, etc.).
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the annual budget for the laboratory.
  • Supervise, design, assign, and/or perform all aspects of laboratory testing and procedures.
  • Manage quality control processes and performance improvement activities.
  • Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel and ensure staff maintain competency to perform test procedures.
  • Resolve technical problems and ensure remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Work alongside the billing department to resolve lab-related issues, including insurance-related concerns.
  • Track and review all incident reports and issues related to compliance within the lab.
  • Ensure each employee has clear direction for daily/weekly/monthly duties and proper laboratory coverage.
  • Oversee Point of Care Testing for the clinic.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Meet CLIA and State regulations/requirements to work as a Lab Manager in a High Complexity Laboratory.
  • ASCP MLS Certification or MT equivalent.
  • 5 years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • 3 years of laboratory supervisor experience supervising employees.
  • BLS Certificate upon hire (or obtained within 3 months of hire).
  • Microsoft Office skills such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of CAP, AAAHC, CLIA, FDA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Extensive Laboratory Information System knowledge.
  • Extensive interface and auto verification skills.
  • Good working knowledge of CLIA and relevant state regulations.
  • 2 years of Laboratory Information System experience.
  • Experience with employee development and laboratory operations.
