The Laboratory Courier is the laboratory’s first line of customer service to our outside facilities and clients. Their thoughtful anticipation of client needs is VITAL in maintaining the sacred trust our clients have with the SJRMC Laboratory. The Laboratory Courier is the communication link between hospital personnel and technologists, section supervisors and laboratory director. The Laboratory Courier plans and organizes the pick-up of laboratory specimens and delivery of reports to outside clinics and physician offices. The Laboratory Courier also performs clinical laboratory pre-analytical laboratory services. This includes knowledge and competency in the following operating system: a. Test requests (i.e., requirements for filling out test request forms, etc.). b. Knowledge of and help ensure the accuracy of the outpatient specimen collection (collected by the physician offices), specimen transport, and specimen receipt/processing. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid New Mexico Driver’s License
  • Clean driving record

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Plans and organizes the pick-up of laboratory specimens and delivery of reports to outside clinics and physician offices.
  • Maintains good patient and public relations.
  • Prints, sorts, and delivers cumulative summary patient reports and pathology reports to physician offices and clinical accounts (upon request).
  • Has knowledge and competency in requirements for a test request. These include: a. Instructions for completion of test request forms. b. Instructions for clinical information. c. Instructions for specimen source. d. Instructions for diagnosis.
  • Understands the medical necessity procedures for collection of specimens for Medicare.
  • Has knowledge of the current list of available in-house testing procedures.
  • Understands guidelines for emergency testing.
  • Competent with specimen identification systems.
  • Has knowledge of the proper preservation, transport media, proper packaging, shipping, and handling and the importance of prompt delivery of laboratory specimens.
  • Has knowledge of storage before testing requirements.
  • Is fully competent with specimen receipt and processing. This includes: a. Specimen accompanied by request. b. Receipt date/time documented. c. Specimen condition. d. Suboptimal material handling. e. Unacceptable specimen disposition. f. LIS accessioning system, continued specimen identification, security, and integrity.
  • Has authority to access hospital information system.
  • Supply requests: SJRMC provides specimen collection preservation and transport supplies free of charge to physicians and clinics when testing is performed at SJRMC. Physicians submit a Supply Request Form. Items are delivered on the next scheduled visit. If there is a delay, office staff will be advised by Courier Service of the status and anticipated delivery date.
  • Provides a communication link from outside entities to hospital personnel, laboratory technologists, section supervisors and/or laboratory director.
  • Has the authority to operate hospital motor vehicles and authority to request service, fuel, and parts. It is the Courier’s responsibility for the upkeep of the hospital’s Lab Courier vehicles. The hospital motor vehicle should have regular maintenance performed and have sufficient fuel. a. Vehicles are to be kept clean, fueled, and well-maintained at all times (i.e., gasoline) b. Vehicle’s exterior is to be washed approximately once a week, more often in inclement weather, c. Oil changes (full service) d. Report any problems with vehicles immediately to the pre-analytical supervisor, lab leadership team or to the Client Service Coordinator in their absence.
  • Make sure scheduling needs are communicated to the pre-analytical supervisor
  • Participate in laboratory meetings.
  • Is encouraged to suggest new ways of better serving our patients.
  • Is encouraged to request attendance to major career related seminars and meetings.
  • Demonstrates teamwork by example in day-to-day coordination of duties with other staff. Scheduling conflicts are virtually always resolved through cooperative discussions with fellow staff members.
