The Laboratory Coordinator for Engineering at the University of Idaho is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a laboratory or field research enterprise. This role includes supervising graduate and undergraduate students, staff researchers, and research support staff, while ensuring quality control and adherence to established guidelines and protocols. The coordinator will also manage budgets and maintain scientific equipment, contributing to the development and modification of scientific devices.

  • Provide functional supervision of day-to-day activities of the laboratory or field research enterprise.
  • Direct the activities of graduate and undergraduate students, staff researchers, and research support staff.
  • Develop guidelines and protocols for lab operations.
  • Assure quality control and maintain budget.
  • Operate, test, and repair electronic and/or scientific test equipment used in the lab.
  • Assist with the construction and modification of new and prototype scientific devices.
  • Provide consulting services to department management and public/private sector entities.
  • Review policies and procedures, recommending changes based on scientific evidence.
  • Supervise scientific/technical staff and direct planning and implementation of scientific programs.
  • Monitor research projects in conjunction with other agencies.
  • Prepare reports assessing the use and effects of chemicals and hazardous substances.
  • Develop and review risk assessments, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Establish work priorities and performance standards, and may be involved in hiring and training staff.
  • Make managerial decisions affecting laboratory efficiency, cost, reputation, and service quality.
  • Develop budgets and exercise control over budgeted funds.
  • Experience in laboratory management or coordination.
  • Strong understanding of scientific protocols and quality control measures.
  • Ability to supervise and direct staff effectively.
  • Experience in budget management and financial oversight.
  • Technical skills in operating and repairing scientific equipment.
  • Experience in consulting within public and private sectors.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies.
  • Knowledge of hazardous substances and their effects.
