About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant at HNL Lab Medicine supports various laboratory departments by performing essential tasks such as order entry, specimen collection, and processing under general supervision. This entry-level position involves clerical functions, maintaining supply inventories, and assisting in training new staff, while ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Laboratory experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions in English.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence in English.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions.
  • Knowledge of E-mail and Lab Information System (training provided).
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving history for those required to travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of and adheres to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Orders, receives, and triages incoming specimens and evaluates specimen integrity.
  • Processes specimens/slides according to the Laboratory Handbook and SOPs; ensures accurate delivery of specimens/slides to appropriate departments.
  • Performs clerical functions including filing and record maintenance, and entry of patient demographics and insurance information.
  • Contacts clients and patients to obtain missing information as needed.
  • Provides on-call and mobile services as required; may travel to multiple locations as assigned.
  • Maintains adequate supply inventories and notifies supervisor/manager of any issues in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the training/orientation of new staff members and participates in continuing education programs.
  • Performs laboratory information systems functions for test receipt, requisition, and labeling.
  • Cleans laboratory equipment, glassware, and work surfaces, and prepares laboratory reagents and other testing supplies with accuracy.
  • Handles forensic toxicology specimens, data, and reports according to forensic testing guidelines.
  • Performs digital pathology slide scanning and instrument maintenance.
