About The Position

The Lab Assistant (Phlebotomy Certified) supports the clinical laboratory operations of a Critical Access Hospital by performing phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing, clerical duties, and assisting laboratory personnel. This role ensures accurate patient identification, proper specimen handling, and timely delivery of laboratory services to support high-quality patient care in a rural healthcare setting.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Current Phlebotomy Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Previous laboratory or healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages (neonatal, pediatric, adult, geriatric).
  • Collect non-blood specimens (urine, stool, sputum, etc.) following proper procedures.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification using established protocols.
  • Label specimens accurately and completely at bedside.
  • Provide compassionate, patient-centered care during specimen collection.
  • Specimen Processing & Handling Process, centrifuge, aliquot, and prepare specimens for in-house testing or referral laboratory shipment.
  • Maintain specimen integrity and follow proper storage requirements.
  • Prepare specimens for courier transport to reference laboratories.
  • Maintain chain-of-custody documentation when required.
  • Clerical & Operational Support Enter laboratory orders and patient information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Answer phone calls and communicate effectively with providers and nursing staff.
  • Assist with scheduling outpatient laboratory appointments.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and notify supervisor of inventory needs.
  • Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of work areas and equipment.
  • Quality & Compliance Adhere to all hospital policies, OSHA standards, and infection control procedures.
  • Follow CLIA and regulatory guidelines applicable to Critical Access Hospitals.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
