Position Summary Performs successful specimen collection while exhibiting competence, professionalism, excellent communication and public relations skills. Will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the healthcare delivery system and familiarity with clinical laboratory services. The Lab Assistant performs equipment validations, calibrations, quality control of observed data, and recordings of normal operations.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ year Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • BLS required.

Responsibilities

  • Collects adequate and correct blood specimens by venipuncture or micro collection techniques on adults, children and infants.
  • Facilitates collection, processing and transportation of clinical laboratory specimens.
  • Accurately and efficiently processes laboratory orders using athena and LabDAQ.
  • Monitors pending lists to ensure timely reporting.
  • Performs and documents results for waived laboratory tests according to procedure.
  • Provides technical and clerical support while ensuring efficient operations.
  • Follows departmental policies to correctly identify the patient with two unique identifiers.
  • Correctly labels all specimens and maintains accurate log records.
  • Follows Universal Precautions and all OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards.
  • Provides collection instructions and processes specimens for urinalysis, stool samples and cultures.
  • Transfers orders from EMR to LIS and enters appropriate information.
  • Performs proficiency testing ensuring that PT samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting Q.C. results.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for instrument operation, calibration and maintenance.
  • Maintains the integrity of the laboratory process by recognizing factors that could introduce error.
  • Follows the laboratory's Corrective Action policies and documents corrective action.
  • Identifies problems that adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  • Registration/chart creation for new patients including entering demographic information.
  • Demonstrates an appreciation of various health insurance plans, including Medicare.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and monitors laboratory supply inventory.
  • Attends mandatory quarterly lab staff meetings and participates in daily huddles.
