services in Indiana! Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the laboratories
perform more than 19 million tests a year. In addition to IU Health, laboratory
testing services are provided to hospitals and physicians across the country.

The Laboratory Assistant I - Histology Prep, at Bloomington LAB, receives and
accepts pathology specimens, Checks ID, tracking forms, requisitions and
specimen containers, accession and properly label specimen containers.

Requirements

• Requires HS grad or GED Equivalent.
• Interest in science preferred.
• Ability to pay strong attention to detail required.
• Interpersonal skills (verbal and written)
• Requires proven understanding of computers.
• Requires telephone skills
• Ability to work independently and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Receive and accept pathology specimens
• Check ID, tracking forms, requisitions and specimen containers
• Accession and properly label specimen containers
• Maintain safe work practices established by regulatory agencies, Hospital, Environmental Health & Safety, Departmental procedures, and policies and utilize proper PPE (personal protective equipment)
• Provide a high level of customer service to the department’s clients including staff at all levels as well as other departments within the institution.
• Interact with Pathologists, Clinicians, Histotechs, and other staff related to specimen description and instructions.
• Maintain cooperative working relationships within a confined work area.
• Plan and prioritize workload.
• Discard medical and chemical waste following established protocols/procedure.
