Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomes, threadlike structures that organize your DNA. Cytogenetic testing is used to look for changes to your chromosomes that can cause diseases. Examples of cytogenetic tests include fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), karyotyping and microarray analysis. As a Laboratory Assistant on our team, you will perform a variety of laboratory procedures and clerical functions across one or more laboratory areas. In this role, you will prepare and analyze patient biological samples, including blood and tissue, to evaluate chromosomes for genetic disorders, abnormalities and diseases such as cancer, while working collaboratively with laboratory staff and pathologists to support accurate testing and diagnosis. A caregiver in this role works days from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with weekend requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of three months of on-the-job training to learn department laboratory procedures, instrumentation and Cleveland Clinic policies
  • Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.
  • Ability to utilize and operate instrumentation.
  • Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.
  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, transporting and storing specimens.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and perform routine instrument maintenance, trouble shooting and minor repairs.
  • Perform clerical duties including answering phones, data entry and filing.
  • Perform Quality Assurance activities.
  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies.
  • Perform inventory management of transporting and distributing supplies.
  • Keep the work area safe and organized.
