About The Position

Laboratory Assistant in the Aquatic Biomonitoring Laboratory will be responsible for the initial physical processing aspects of aquatic macroinvertebrate samples, including sorting macroinvertebrate specimens from sample debris and mounting select specimens to microscope slides. Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) must be followed at all times. Laboratory Assistant will follow all established laboratory procedures and policies presented in ABL Quality Assurance Program Plan. Laboratory Assistant reports directly to Aquatic Biomonitoring Laboratory Manager Jeffrey Dimick. Primary location for Laboratory Assistant is Trainer Natural Resources Building 440 & 440A. Remote location is not available. Position breakdown – 80% - Process aquatic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring samples. Basic processing duties include sorting macroinvertebrate specimens from sample debris and mounting select specimens to microscope slides. Standard Operating Procedures must be adhered to at all times. 5% - Perform laboratory maintenance as assigned. 5% - Provide laboratory logistical support. 5% - Attend mandated trainings. 5% - Support laboratory outreach. Position details – Position involves extensive microscope and magnifier-assisted work and intricate movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform visual activities using microscopes and magnifiers. Most tasks are performed from a seated position. Occasional lifting to 50 pounds. High attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks are essential.

Requirements

  • Current or continuing University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point undergraduate student.
  • Full-time enrollment status during period of hire.
  • Available for the entire academic year.
  • Position involves extensive microscope and magnifier-assisted work and intricate movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform visual activities using microscopes and magnifiers.
  • Most tasks are performed from a seated position.
  • Occasional lifting to 50 pounds.
  • High attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks are essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous aquatic macroinvertebrate experience preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated interest in aquatic macroinvertebrates and aquatic ecology.
  • Majors and Minors focused on aquatic ecology.
