About The Position

The Animal Resources Program is a department in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and our mission is to Provide the highest quality of veterinary medical care, husbandry, enrichment and professional technical support to enable excellence in biomedical research at WFUSOM Promote a culture of respect and compassion for all laboratory animals worked with in research Train comparative veterinary specialists and advance lab animal sciences through innovative research Foster an environment of inclusion and diversity in our department and with our partners We serve the animals by delivering compassionate and humane care The research community by providing the infrastructure and expertise required to support good and sound animal-based research Our institution by providing a fiscally responsible animal care and use program The general public by ensuring animal well-being and regulatory compliance while facilitating advancement of knowledge in human and animal health JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs general care and maintenance of laboratory animals and facilities in a research and teaching environment. The position is responsible for following standard operating procedures for 1) feeding laboratory animals, 2) cleaning and maintaining housing for laboratory animals, 3) conducting animal health checks, 4) documenting all activities associated with daily care and husbandry, 5) receiving and housing laboratory animals. This position is considered essential personnel for lab animal care.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent with previous lab animal experience.
  • Valid applicable state driver's license.
  • Ability to operate routine animal care and use equipment (e.g., tunnel washer, rack washer, bulk sterilizer)
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to perform necessary documentation and recordkeeping
  • Ability to utilize simple computer skills e.g. email, training modules
  • Ability to work as a team or independently
  • Good time management skills
  • Good interpersonal/human relations skills
  • Ability to mentor LATT staff
  • Negative tests for active tuberculosis, color vision

Nice To Haves

  • American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Capable of performing duties as specified for Laboratory Animal Technician Trainee (LATT) position.
  • Safely handles and restrains all animal species while maintaining proper identification and location.
  • Assembles caging equipment in order to provide comfortable, safe housing for all species.
  • Completes and documents supply and diet inventory on a weekly basis.
  • Communicates pertinent information to clinical, supervisory, and management personnel in writing and verbally.
  • Provides species specific environmental enrichment items according to schedules and assist Environmental Enrichment coordinator with special enrichment needs.
