About The Position

The Laboratory Animal Technician I position at the Center for Comparative Medicine is responsible for the care and husbandry of research animals, ensuring their health and well-being in compliance with established standards and regulations. This role involves working under general supervision to provide skilled care for a diverse group of laboratory animals, including USDA covered species, and requires alternating weekend and holiday work. The technician will also oversee the work of entry-level staff and ensure adherence to quality assurance standards.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Responsibilities

  • Provides daily husbandry of laboratory animals including observation, handling, feeding, and sanitizing animal quarters.
  • Handles and transports animals and bedding material safely and in compliance with regulations.
  • Identifies and reports animal health concerns using an electronic medical record system.
  • Reviews and complies with standard operating procedures and quality assurance standards.
  • Oversees work areas to ensure task completion and accuracy of logs.
  • Provides guidance and training to Animal Care Attendants.
  • Recognizes and troubleshoots minor husbandry-related needs.
  • Performs weaning and sexing of rodents.
  • Tracks and enters husbandry-related charges.
