About The Position

The Laboratory Animal Technician 1 is responsible for providing basic care and husbandry for a variety of laboratory research animals at OHSU. This entry-level position involves working closely with a team to ensure the health and wellbeing of animals, while also being the first line of defense in identifying health and environmental issues. The role requires close supervision and is distinguished from higher-level technician positions by its focus on training and limited independent decision-making.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Skill in making careful visual observations.
  • Skill in communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in performing basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Skill in handling, restraint, identification, and sexing common varieties of laboratory animals.
  • Skill in keeping accurate records.
  • Skill in driving motor vehicles and maintaining a valid Class C driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Any direct experience working with animals.

Responsibilities

  • Transport supplies and equipment needed for animal care.
  • Change cages and accessory equipment as needed or on a predetermined schedule.
  • Feed and water various species of laboratory animals according to departmental, USDA, and NIH standards.
  • Exercise USDA maintained species as required by regulation or as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Observe animals for health and wellbeing, reporting any abnormalities promptly in writing.
  • Record observations in clinical records.
  • Administer medications and treatments to animals as instructed by veterinary staff.
  • Monitor the environment in animal areas for changes or potential hazards, reporting any changes to the supervisor.
  • Maintain and sanitize animal rooms and support areas, including sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting.
  • Handle feed and bedding appropriately, ensuring the oldest material is used first.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by DCM standard operating procedures and federal regulations.
