About The Position

Labor Relations has an outstanding opportunity for a Labor Relations Specialist to join their team. About this Opportunity The Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for actively participating in collective bargaining and successfully articulate the evolving labor relations positions of the University of Washington in a variety of online and print media. Additionally, the Labor Relations Specialist will ensure the coordination and implementation of labor agreements, across other areas of the University.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human resources, public administration or related field
  • 3 years of relevant experience with project focused work that required a high attention to detail and fast pace.
  • Experience as a project manager where timeliness, group collaboration and quality outputs are measured and essential
  • Demonstrated ability to form and mobilize project specific teams with and ensure collaborations across the team and with other teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with unions while maintaining an excellent relationship of trust and integrity
  • Ability to quickly adapt and prioritize amidst competing projects in a constantly-evolving environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals from a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds
  • Effective, compelling and diplomatic communication style in person, over the phone and by the written word
  • Experience in writing draft language for press releases, executive summaries and articles for print or electronic media
  • Experience and discretion working with and protecting confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent facility with electronic systems including all elements of Microsoft Office and SharePoint
  • A clear sense of urgency and strong organizational ability
  • Attentive to detail, with strong proofreading and editing skills

Nice To Haves

  • Training or experience in Labor Relations, Payroll, Human Resources, Contract Management, and/or Project Management.
  • Familiarity with basic HTML a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Project management: Independently analyze CBAs for implementation items and collaborate with wide-ranging University stakeholders. Initiate, coordinate, and fulfill changes, including pay-impacting items, over the duration of the entire CBA. Analyze and process union information requests and provide counsel to other HR professionals and management. Act as management representative to the union. Communicate efficiently and effectively with all stakeholders: UW management, union partners, LRO, UWHR, AGO, etc. Responsible for guaranteeing the successful completion of multiple projects at once; for example, settlement implementations, union information requests, and implementation of collective bargaining agreements. Oversee projects through all phases: initiation, planning, execution, and closure.
  • Serve as point person for: Supporting Labor Relations Negotiators during collective bargaining including preparation tasks, coordinating exchange of article proposals between bargaining parties, and tracking overall progress towards a complete collective bargaining agreement. Maintaining Primary Written Record during collective bargaining for future reference. These notes can be used as evidence in grievances, arbitration, and other legal proceedings. Ensure that a historical record is kept of all bargaining agreements for future reference. Applying a sophisticated, in-depth understanding of labor relations issues to craft recaps that effectively capture the facts brought forth during collective bargaining sessions and further the labor relations strategy of the University. Vet summaries with stakeholders and publish online. Compiling, formatting, and finalizing all tentative agreements into a complete collective bargaining agreement for dissemination to the University, unions, and the public. Facilitating timely dues requests from union partners, UW employees, and UW management as detailed in each collective bargaining agreement.
  • LRO Administration: Respond to emails sent to LRO from unions, employees, managers, and other University HR professionals and escalate as appropriate. Work with LRO to organize, develop, and document processes according to the records retention policy as set forth by UW. Actively participate in Labor Relations team planning, internal communications, goal setting and assessment. Work with the Labor Relations team to organize, develop and document labor relations processes. Demonstrate excellent facility with electronic systems such as Microsoft Office, DocuSign, and HTML. Conduct special projects and other duties as assigned. Assist with administrative tasks including meeting scheduling and meeting preparation, triaging and responding to emails and phone calls, and provide back-up phone coverage as necessary.
