About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Certified Midwife (CM), or Physician Assistant (PA - is a licensed practitioner who, through advanced education, training, and clinical experience, has gained expertise in obstetric patient care. The APP demonstrates advanced knowledge, skills, and credentialing required to function in an expanded scope of practice, including assessment, management, and care coordination for patients on the Labor & Delivery, antepartum, and postpartum units. The APP provides patient- and family-centered care in collaboration with attending physicians, residents, nurses, and other health professionals. Responsibilities include patient assessment, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, therapeutic interventions, consultations, and the implementation and evaluation of individualized plans of care. The APP is essential to ensuring safe, timely, and effective case management for obstetric patients, contributing to throughput, quality, and patient experience.

Requirements

  • Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited NP, CNM, or CM program - required.
  • Current New York State licensure and national certification as NP, CNM, or CM - required.
  • RN licensure (for NP/CNM pathways) - required.
  • BLS and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification - required; ACLS preferred.
  • Certification in Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFFM) or successful completion of C-EFM within 3 months of start date - required.
  • Demonstrated ability to master electronic medical recordkeeping and billing systems.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills; must project a professional image and earn the confidence of patients, families, and colleagues.
  • HIPAA compliance and commitment to patient confidentiality at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of obstetric, women's health, or Labor & Delivery experience preferred; new graduates with strong clinical training will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, psychology, maternal health, fetal development, and medical terminology appropriate to obstetric and intrapartum care.
  • Evaluate and manage patients presenting to Labor & Delivery, antepartum, and postpartum units, including history taking, physical examinations, diagnostic work-up, and care planning.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and imaging studies; prescribe medications and therapies within scope of licensure.
  • Manage low- and moderate-risk intrapartum patients, including cervical examinations, labor management, fetal monitoring, counseling, and documentation.
  • Provide postpartum care, including assessments, patient education, discharge planning, and follow-up coordination.
  • Assist with triage of obstetric patients, supporting timely evaluation and disposition.
  • Participate in obstetric emergencies and team-based rapid responses (e.g., postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia/eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, neonatal resuscitation).
  • Perform procedures within scope, which may include artificial rupture of membranes, intrauterine pressure catheter placement, repair of minor lacerations, vaginal deliveries, and other skills as credentialed.
  • Collaborate with attending physicians, residents, and nursing staff to optimize patient care and clinical workflow.
  • Act as a mentor, preceptor, and role model for new staff, residents, and students.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement, safety initiatives, and professional development activities.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and coding for effective billing; maintain medical records and comply with institutional policies.
