About The Position

MPF Federal is seeking a qualified Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor & Delivery to provide intrapartum coverage services at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. This position is designated as mission essential and requires onsite clinical support during scheduled shifts, including federally recognized holidays. Compensation is pursuant to the Service Contract Act (SCA). The RN Labor & Delivery will provide comprehensive inpatient intrapartum nursing care in accordance with established nursing standards, hospital policies, AWHONN guidelines, and evidence-based obstetric practices.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing
  • Graduate from a college or university accredited by ACEN or CCNE
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience within the last two (2) years as a Registered Nurse in an inpatient intrapartum (Labor & Delivery) setting
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification (AWHONN)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) or Emergencies in Clinical Obstetrics (ECO)
  • New employees must complete ALSO within 180 days of hire (may be completed at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth)
  • STABLE certification (Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, Emotional Support)
  • Strong intrapartum nursing assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Advanced fetal heart rate interpretation
  • Ability to manage high-acuity obstetric patients
  • Strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of infection control and patient safety procedures
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record systems
  • Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients during the intrapartum period
  • Perform maternal and fetal assessments, including advanced fetal heart rate monitoring and interpretation
  • Monitor labor progression and identify deviations from normal labor patterns
  • Assist with vaginal and cesarean deliveries
  • Administer medications and IV therapies in accordance with provider orders
  • Manage obstetric emergencies including shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, fetal distress, and emergent cesarean sections
  • Provide immediate newborn stabilization and support in collaboration with neonatal teams
  • Educate patients and families regarding labor, delivery, and postpartum expectations
  • Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols
  • Remain calm and communicate effectively during high-risk obstetric events
  • Anticipate potential complications and intervene appropriately
  • Notify appropriate supervisory personnel of clinical concerns
  • Perform timely, accurate, and concise documentation of patient care
  • Maintain legible records in accordance with clinic directives
  • Operate and maintain proficiency in automated systems including MHS GENESIS, ADS, CIS, and other clinical information systems
  • Participate in Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions
  • Maintain and respond to DOD email and voicemail communications as required
  • Maintain productivity comparable to peers performing similar services
  • Participate in peer review and the MTF Performance Improvement Program
  • Comply with infection control policies, aseptic techniques, and universal precautions
  • Properly handle, store, and dispose of infectious waste
  • Participate in implementation of the Family Advocacy Program as directed
  • Attend and complete all required annual training including disaster preparedness, infection control, Sexual Harassment prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens, Fire and Safety, CBRNE, MHS GENESIS, and other mandatory MTF training
  • Participate in clinical simulations and drills facilitated by the unit nurse educator and simulation center
  • Provide in-service education and clinical direction to supporting government personnel (e.g., hospital corpsmen, students)
  • Attend meetings as directed
  • Exercise appropriate clinical delegation and coordinate care among healthcare team members
  • Maintain awareness of legal and ethical considerations in patient care
  • Practice with professional accountability and responsibility
  • Support a safe, respectful, and patient-centered care environment
  • Participate in continuing education to support professional growth
