LD RN's care for women during labor and childbirth, monitoring the baby and the mother, coaching mothers and assisting doctors. They prepare women, and their families, for the stages of giving birth and help patients with breastfeeding after the baby is born. In addition to assisting women throughout labor and the birthing process, LD RN's care for women who experience complications with their pregnancies and assist surgeons during cesarean deliveries. LD RN's can work in a variety of settings such as hospital delivery rooms, physician's offices, birthing centers, and community clinics. L&D RN's may be asked to float to Postpartum or Mother Baby due to census.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): 4-Year Education
  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN): 2-Year Education
  • Must earn an ADN or BSN degree and pass the NCLEX to apply for a license as a RN
  • Must have an active state license
  • NRP and AWHONN certifications are often required
