About The Position

The Labeling Specialist position is responsible for creating and ensuring compliance of federally regulated product label information, including nutrition, ingredient declarations, allergens, claims, and other third-party certifications. This role also addresses regulatory issues pertaining to food labeling and claims and manages several projects at once while working across all functions (Marketing, Research & Development (R&D), Legal, Supply Chain, and Quality) and communicates on labeling-related and compliance matters for General Mills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, or a related field
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in Labeling, Regulatory, or other relevant food experiences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possesses strong teamwork and interpersonal skills to facilitate interaction with cross-functional team members, external vendors, and/or regulators.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, proficient in multitasking and prioritization to meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including root cause analysis, risk assessment, and corrective action.
  • Working knowledge of regional regulatory standards and documentation requirements, food safety, and food allergens

Responsibilities

  • Provide food labeling expertise and communicate cross-functionally regarding current and emerging food labeling issues, opportunities, and impact to products and claims.
  • Work across functional teams to assure compliance with local and regional regulations, third-party certification standards, and company policies.
  • Develop and maintain accurate food labeling information for finished products (e.g., allergens, nutrition, ingredient statements, product name, claims) to assure compliance with federal and state regulations (FDA, USDA), third-party certification standards (non-GMO project, GFCO), and General Mills policies.
  • Complete and submit documentation to support regulatory requirements and claims (USDA, state regulatory requirements, import/export) and interact with regulators and/or third-party agencies as necessary.
  • Contribute to, review, and approve artwork, packaging, graphics, and text of existing and proposed product labels to ensure accuracy, consistency, and regulation compliance.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current regulations, relevant technical product and processing information, industry trends, and food labeling practices.
  • Develop and inform communication for consumer and customer inquiries pertaining to labeling.
  • Collaborate to manage regulatory, food safety, litigation, brand, and third-party risk for General Mills products and businesses and provide input into risk management decisions, balancing regulatory risk with business and operational needs.
  • Effectively problem-solve and leverage regulatory relationships and tools to minimize the impact of sourcing and production challenges.
  • Lead with ideas for process and system simplification and standardization.
