The Lab Technologist performs laboratory procedures to obtain results for physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This role requires independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision, while effectively communicating with other healthcare professionals.

  • Accurately performs high complexity, moderate complexity, or waived laboratory testing according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions and records troubleshooting activities.
  • Confirms, verifies, and reports test results independently, monitoring for reasonableness and critical values.
  • Correlates and interprets data generated from testing.
  • Assists physicians in the interpretation of test results within the scope of the profession.
  • Conducts established quality control and performance improvement activities.
  • Provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students.
  • Prepares and/or collects specimens for analysis.
  • Participates in Continuous System Improvement (CSI) and continuing education programs.
  • Performs instrument and assay validations.
  • Performs and signs off on technical competencies.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related science field from an accredited institution, or must meet CLIA grandfathered medical technologist regulations.
  • Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing.
  • Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc).
  • Experience with laboratory information systems.
  • Familiarity with quality control and performance improvement activities.
