About The Position

Overview Performs hematology analyses and other functions pertinent to hematology analyses.

Requirements

  • One to two (1-2) years experience as a technician
  • Certification by New York City Department of Health qualified in Hematology (Policy Requirement)
  • High School or GED (Required)
  • Basic Computer knowledge (Required)

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of the Dr. Martin Luther King Health Center and its employees.
  • Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.
  • Performs routine Hematology and Urinalysis procedures as listed in the Laboratory Procedure Manuals.
  • Reports results of Hematology and Urinalysis Proceduresa. Slips must be neat, dated, initialed and stamped time in-time outb. Panic values and “to be called results” must be called within 15 minutes of completing testc. Time of all must be documented on the laboratory request and in log book
  • Performs designated Quality Control Procedures.a. Results that do not correlate must be identified and reportedb. The supervisor must be notified at least 90% of the time, if Quality Control results are out of established range.
  • Notify supervisor when supplies, test kits or reagents should be re-ordered.
  • Perform repeat tests when results are questionable.
  • Judge the adequacy of submitted specimens. Request an additional specimen if unsatisfactory. Return request if unsatisfactory.
  • Responsible to follow all hospital rules and regulations and those of the Clinical Laboratories.
  • Technician must work under direct supervision.
  • Technician will share clerical duties with other staff as need arises.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when working with patients, families, visitors and/or hospital employees.
  • Performs other duties necessary for the welfare of patients or the efficient operation of the Hospital.
