The Ray lab, in The Department of Pediatrics, University of Virginia's (UVA) School of Medicine, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Lab and Research Technician to support our research team. This position is critical to the success of our lab, which relies heavily on rodent models (mice and rats) to advance our scientific investigations. The technician will be responsible for managing our rodent colonies, performing experimental procedures, and contributing to the overall maintenance and compliance of the lab. The laboratory explores molecular physiology and cellular mechanisms that precipitate pediatric renal diseases, with a focus on understanding the pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome, capillary permeability, and angiogenesis in pediatric kidney diseases.

  • Manage and maintain rodent colonies (approximately 300 cages).
  • Set up and perform medical and experimental treatments on rodents.
  • Conduct tissue harvesting and processing.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping of animal work.
  • Share general lab maintenance duties.
  • Assist in animal protocol preparation.
  • Collect specimens and perform experiments of a repetitive nature.
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.
  • Perform biological, hematological, chemical, or physical analysis as directed.
  • Participate in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals.
  • Care for and feed animals, clean and sanitize cages, and observe during post-operative or treatment periods.
  • May perform some surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Prepare support materials and assist with analyses of data.
  • Write reports and assist with literature reviews.
  • Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments.
  • Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
  • Keep informed of new lab techniques.
  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • Contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results.
  • Provide logistical support to the study.
  • High school diploma or equivalent for Lab and Research Technician 1.
  • At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.
  • Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Associate's degree for Lab and Research Technician 2.
  • At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
