About The Position

The Lab Animal Technician position at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a seasonal, part-time role focused on providing essential care for research animals in an AAALAC-accredited facility. The role involves maintaining the health and well-being of various research animals while supporting the operation and administration of the animal care facility. This position offers flexible hours ranging from 14 to 30 hours per week on weekdays, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about animal care and laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma is required.
  • Registered Assistant Laboratory Animal Care Technician is preferred but not required.
  • Six months of relevant work experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently in both clean and dirty cage wash areas.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and concrete routines.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Time management skills and effective oral communication skills are required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to operate cage washers, autoclaves, and other disinfecting/sterilizing equipment.
  • Ability to work with or around laboratory animals and restrain them.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general housekeeping and maintain facility equipment.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on cage wash and autoclaves.
  • Sanitize, maintain, and repair animal caging materials as needed.
  • Ensure clean and organized animal holding rooms and cage wash areas.
  • Assist with the receipt, stocking, and maintenance of supply inventories.
  • Prepare and submit required written records, charts, logs, and inventories.
  • Monitor daily animal welfare and perform health observations.
  • Provide basic animal husbandry duties including feeding, watering, and cage changes.
  • Record health concerns and communicate with other technicians and investigative staff about mechanical or animal welfare issues.
  • Receive, inspect, and put away incoming animals; assist in breeding and weaning procedures.

Benefits

  • Compensation of $19.00-$22.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
